Ginga middleware

Brazil adopts Java DTV for its Ginga middleware

By 12 votes to one, the Brazilian Digital TV System Forum (SBTVD) resolved the adoption of Java DTV for the development of Ginga-J, the Brazilian digital TV middleware. Discussion had turned around whether the country should adopt the open system developed by Sun or the GEM system (Globally Executable MHP), which has a good penetration in other markets, although its royalties cost is higher than Java´s.

Sun had fixed the royalties value at USD 0.39 cents per piece of equipment. However, there were other manufacturers that could offer the same technology at a lower cost, up to USD 0.17 per device. The Forum decided that the government should negotiate the royalties´ amount with Sun and the value obtained should be also transferred to all the Latin American countries who decide to adopt ISDB.

Intel and Sun Microsystems will be in charge of the development, which they expect to replicate with manufacturers in other countries of the region that adopt ISDB. The objective, according to what companies said, is to offer middleware developers, converters? manufacturers and consumers in general, a better performance in digital TV interactive applications.
